Hawkeye’s Minidress: A Tribute
I’m in the planning stages on a much more involved post about how notions of gender performance and sexuality play into male superhero costumes. A combination of that research, all the movie hype, and especially Chris Haley’s excellent “worst costumes” poster spoof got me thinking about Hawkeye’s truly bizarre 1972-73 “hippie in a miniskirt” costume. So here it is, in all its short-lived (and just plain short) glory.
Art is variously by Barry Windsor-Smith, Rich Buckler, Jim Starlin, and Don Heck. Windsor-Smith probably created the costume, which makes sense since he was a Conan the Barbarian guy, and that probably seemed like plenty of clothes to him.
